Description

NI PXI-6713 8-Channel 12-Bit High-Speed Analog Output Module

The NI PXI-6713 is a high-speed analog output module designed for multichannel waveform generation, electronic stimulus, automated test, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, laboratory control, and production applications. The module provides eight voltage output channels with 12-bit digital-to-analog conversion and a maximum update rate of 1 MS/s per channel under supported operating configurations.

Each output channel provides a nominal ±10 V range and can also operate with compatible external-reference scaling. The outputs are DC coupled and support programmable static voltages, ramps, sine waves, arbitrary waveforms, simulated sensor signals, control profiles, and other analog stimulus patterns.

A 16,384-sample onboard FIFO supports buffered waveform generation and reduces dependence on continuous host-computer transfers. The PXI-6713 supports DMA, interrupt, and programmed I/O data transfers for integration into compatible NI-DAQ and NI-DAQmx application environments.

The module also includes eight TTL/CMOS-compatible digital I/O lines, two 24-bit counter/timers, programmable timing connections, and PXI backplane triggering resources. These additional functions support synchronized waveform generation, event control, external triggering, pulse generation, and coordination with compatible PXI measurement modules.

High-Speed Analog Output

The PXI-6713 provides eight voltage outputs for applications requiring several programmable stimulus signals. Each channel can generate static levels or hardware-timed waveforms according to the selected application and software configuration.

The maximum update rate depends on the number of active channels and the selected transfer method. Up to five channels can operate at 1 MS/s using the onboard FIFO. The documented FIFO-based rate decreases to 952 kS/s with six active channels, 833 kS/s with seven channels, and 740 kS/s with all eight channels active.

Host-memory waveform generation can support 1 MS/s through six channels under the documented reference conditions. Host-memory performance depends on the controller, operating system, software, bus activity, and other installed modules.

Analog Output Performance

The analog outputs provide a 20 V/µs slew rate and a documented settling time of 3.0 µs to within ±0.5 LSB. These characteristics support controlled waveform generation and relatively fast transitions between output levels.

The module provides a maximum output impedance of 0.1 ohm and a maximum current drive of ±5 mA. Compatible passive loads can have capacitance up to 1,500 pF.

Each output includes short-circuit-to-ground protection. This protection should not be treated as permission to operate continuously into an unsuitable load or to exceed the documented voltage and current limits.

Digital I/O and Counter/Timer Functions

The PXI-6713 includes eight TTL/CMOS-compatible digital I/O lines. These lines can support device control, status monitoring, test-fixture operation, external handshaking, and synchronization with compatible equipment.

The module also includes two 24-bit up/down counter/timers. Available base clocks include 20 MHz and 100 kHz, with a documented maximum source frequency of 20 MHz.

Counter/timer resources can be used for compatible event counting, pulse generation, timing measurements, frequency measurements, and hardware-controlled test sequences.

PXI Timing and Triggering

The PXI-6713 supports hardware triggering for coordinated waveform operation. Analog output start, gate, and clock functions can use supported external or backplane timing signals.

The PXI implementation provides six backplane trigger lines, one PXI star-trigger resource, and one PXI clock connection. These resources help coordinate stimulus generation with compatible acquisition, switching, digital, and measurement modules installed in the same chassis.

System Requirements

The NI PXI-6713 requires a compatible 3U PXI or CompactPCI chassis, system controller, supported NI driver environment, application software, and a suitable I/O cable or terminal block.

A compatible 68-pin cable provides access to the analog outputs, digital I/O, counter/timer signals, trigger connections, reference input, and grounds. Shielded cabling is recommended for controlled signal integrity and electromagnetic compatibility.

The connected device must remain within the module’s ±10 V output range, ±5 mA drive capability, and supported capacitive loading. The PXI-6713 is a voltage-output module and is not intended to directly power high-current loads.

Comprehensive Functional and Performance Testing

The NI PXI-6713 receives comprehensive functional and performance testing before shipment. Evaluation may include PXI chassis recognition, driver communication, onboard self-test, analog output generation, static voltage operation, buffered waveform output, digital I/O, counter/timer functions, and trigger resources.

Analog testing may include representative voltage measurements across all eight channels, output offset, linearity, waveform generation, settling behavior, and channel response using suitable calibrated measurement equipment.

The 68-pin connector, backplane connector, front panel, retaining hardware, printed circuit assembly, module shielding, labels, and identification markings may be inspected for contamination, bent contacts, corrosion, physical damage, unauthorized modification, or excessive wear.

The exact testing scope depends on the available PXI chassis, controller, driver version, I/O cable, terminal block, oscilloscope, digital multimeter, counter equipment, and requested output conditions.

Calibration Before Shipment

When technically applicable and selected, the NI PXI-6713 can be calibrated or performance-verified before shipment. Evaluation may include analog output voltage accuracy, offset, gain, linearity, monotonicity, digital I/O operation, and timing functions.

Calibration documentation should identify the module model and serial number, tested channels, commanded output levels, measured voltages, reference equipment, environmental conditions, recorded results, and applicable measurement uncertainty.

Buyers requiring formal calibration should specify the required output channels, voltage points, external-reference testing, certificate format, recorded results, and required measurement uncertainty before purchase.
